Tai O fishing village, Hong Kong, China

Tai O is a small fishing village a short drive from the city life of Hong Kong. The villagers known as Tankas, number about 4000, and live on houses made on stilts because they are afraid to live on the land.

About this place:

The 4000 residents or Tankas of the Tai O fishing village on Lantau Island live a long life, because they say they are carefree and do not worry about tomorrow. They say they have no worries..."we wake up poor and end the day rich because we go fishing in the morning and sell our catch in the afternoon." Their homes or Pangwus are built above the water on stilts because they are afraid to live on the land. Tai O is quite a tourist destination but Hong Kong is moving so fast its in danger of losing some of its historic buildings and sites. “We’re not very good about preserving our history, unlike San Francisco,” says Alan Wong, Senior Vice President, Cathay Pacific Airways.

I was in tiny Tai O back in December, it was seriously lovely and off the beaten track. What a contrast to go there after being on Hong Kong Island! I had some seafood and tried the dried scallops you can find among the many stalls installed in the streets. I went to see the huge buddha after, but it was crowed, I enjoyed Tai O much more for that reason.
