Once upon a time there was a Colonel named Griffith J. Griffith. In the late 1800's, at the end of his life, Griffith J. Griffith granted a large plot of land to the small City of Los Angeles. One of his wishes was that an observatory be built on this land. So, in 1933, construction began on Griffith Observatory. Completed in 1935, it is a stunning example of Art Deco style. In the early part of this century, the Observatory underwent a massive renovation and is once again open to the public. Admission is free - just like Colonel Griffith wanted.
