This is How It's Done, Silly American

A member of the staff at Motonago Ryokan instructs a clueless foreigner (my wife) on proper dining technique. Our dinner involved many courses, and it was brought to us in our room.

About this place:

This traditional Japanese-style inn is superbly located in the historic district of Kyoto. The rooms are appointed in a traditional Japanese style -- tatami mats on the floors and futons that are unrolled at night. The home-cooked meals (breakfast and/or dinner) are excellent, and the staff speaks some English (but not much). All in all, it's a friendly and convenient place to stay in Kyoto for anyone looking for an authentic Japanese experience.
