Place to eat: La Bodegueta, Barcelona, Spain

About this place:

This classic tapas bar in the heart of the well-heeled L'Eixample neighborhood offers basic tapas like cheese, chorizo, jamon iberico (cured ham), olivas rellenas (anchovy-stuffed olives), patatas bravas (fried potatoes with a spicy sauce), Spanish tortilla (a thick omelet with potato and onion), and the ubiquitous pan con tomate (bread smeared with tomato, garlic, and olive oil). The inside is always packed, but don't be shy about elbowing your way to a space at the bar or at one of the tiny tables. Even better, snag a table outside on the Rambla de Catalunya's pedestrian walkway--there's no better perch for people-watching. Tapas and beer for two comes to around €30.

When Andrew, my then-boyfriend, moved to Barcelona for business school, I flew over with him to help him settle in. It was my first time in Spain, so I was both thrilled about being in a new country, and distraught at our imminent separation. On our first night, we had dinner at La Bodegueta--my very first dinner in Spain. Six months later, I moved to Barcelona too. La Bodegueta remained one of our favorite places; and it was, fittingly enough, where we had our final meal the night before sadly moving back to the U.S.
