Place to see: Büyük Mecidiye Camii, Ortaköy, Turkey

Büyük Mecidiye Camii

Büyük Mecidiye Camii

(Grand Imperial Mosque of Sultan Abdülmecid, 1855) If you travel to Ortaköy, a small fishing village just south of the Boğaziçi Köprüsü (Bosphorus Bridge) that spans the Bosphorus and walk past the shops and restaurants down to the water you will find a beautiful mosque at the waters edge.

About this place:

If you're ever in Istanbul and looking for interesting places a little off the beaten path Ortaköy is a place for you. Nestled on the west bank of the Bosphorus just south of the Bosphorus Bridge, it is a quaint fishing village that has much to offer. A boat ride along the Bosphorus between the two bridges that span it, restaurants that allow you to pick the exact fish you want served to you (if you care for fish), and shops that often have unusual treats for the tourist tired of the normal fair. Oh, and bring your camera.
