Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is home to the youngest and most in tact volcano of the San Francisco volcanic chain. The volcano's eruption, occurring nearly a millennium ago, gave the San Francisco mountains a rebirth to volcanic activity. Today you can take a lava flow exploration path, sleep on volcanic ash in one of the campgrounds, and explore the volcano through hikes.
Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument is located off of Hwy 89 just north of Flagstaff, AZ. Hwy 89 is the other route to the Grand Canyon coming from Flagstaff and drops you on the east side of the Canyon.
