A roadside shack in Ubud, Bali cooking up dream-inducing BBQ and pouring drinks you won't soon forget, except maybe after your third martini...
The best bloody mary in Asia and possibly the greatest martini in the world makes me go back again and again to Naughty Nuri’s Warung – a shack of a restaurant in the hills of Ubud, Bali. The sweet smoky ribs and the juicy, perfectly-charred filet mignon however, makes me dream of this laid back slice of heaven. The restaurant is owned by a Balinese lady and her New Yorker husband and is a hangout of local expats and very fortunate tourists. The sole menu on the wall has lots to offer from Indonesian specialties to spaghetti – but you can skip the menu and just sit down and order some of the best BBQ ribs ($6) and filet mignon ($10) you’ll ever have at unbelievable prices. Don’t forget a side of the crispy steak fries! Order a martini and a few minutes later your waitress will deliver a chilled glass with either a twist or olives and then go to work with the shaker before filling your glass to the rim and finishing with a snap. Just lean over and take a slow sip before attempting to pick it up and watch your consumption - the last time I was there one customer passed out on the bench! If you find yourself hurting in the morning, simply return for one of their stellar bloody marys.
Nuri’s in located across from the Neka Art Museum on the road north out of Ubud. Open daily 9am-10pm. Cash only.
