California's Elephant Seals

California's Elephant Seals

Pull off the scenic stretch of California's Highway 1 near Piedras Blancas, just north of San Simeon, and you may find yourself standing a few feet away from a few hundred of these enormous seals. But, stay on the designated board walk--males can weigh up to two and half tons and are known to be bit cranky.

About this place:

A few minutes North of San Simeon and Hearst's Castle, off California's scenic Highway 1, a colony of elephant seals gathers every year to breed. Hundreds of these mammoth animals come ashore here after months at sea to give birth to pups and eventually to mate. A nonprofit group called The Friends of Elephant Seals maintains the area, providing boardwalks informational signs. Often docents are present to answer questions. The winter months provide the most elephant seal viewing entertainment!
