An early morning excursion took us to the island of Santa Cruz, looking for nesting flamingos. We didn't see any, but this serene, deserted beach was full of other wildlife.

About this place:

Although one typically thinks of the Galapagos as a haven for Darwin's finches and giant tortoises, there are now 40,000 people living on the islands. Despite the large population, it is still a place where you can find yourself on a deserted beach. My group arrived at this one looking to spot flamingos, but it turned out it was just us and the crabs.

    On my last day in Ecuador, I awoke to the slow and steady rocking of the ship. I watched as the sun rose over the surreally placid Equatorial waters of the Galapagos. A cool breeze offset an already humid day as we went ashore hoping to spot flamingos at a lagoon. Finding none, we enjoyed the crabs and fish instead. A morning stroll on a deserted beach before flying to Lima: a lesson in the distinct experiences of travel.
