Poas Volcano

Poas Volcano

The crater of Poas Volcano in San Jose, Costa Rica.

About this place:

Volcan Poas National Park is located about an hour outside of San Jose, Costa Rica. Volcan Poas is an active volcano with a lake of molten sulfur that emits a greenish sulfur mist. This crater is the largest active crater in the world. The other crater is dormant. There are relatively easy hiking trails that lead to both craters, but the elevation is around 8,000 feet here, so take it easy and drink lots of water.

On a clear day, we visited Poas Volcano. Some friends visited the next day but due to the cloudy weather saw nothing. I had never seen an active volcano before and was awestruck by its enormity and slightly nauseated from inhaling the sulfurous fumes. The volcano has emitted ash and lava as recently as the 1950s, but today only an eerie mist emerges from its lake of molten sulfur. The trails around the volcano led through dense, mysterious forests that, with the twisted tree trunks and a verdant canopy, reminded me of an enchanted forest out of a fairy tale.
