Between heats at the Bring Your Own Big Wheel races

For the last six or seven years, the Bring Your Own Big Wheel races (warning: embedded music) have been a San Francisco Easter tradition, started by local Jon Brumit. In 2007, when this picture was taken, a medium-sized event tolerated by the locals grew roughly tenfold, flooding the famous street with between 200 and 300 participants, and many, many more spectators.

About this place:

One of San Francisco's most recognizable streets, it's almost cliché to come here during a visit to the city, but the novelty of such an unusual street is inarguably fun. Most locals never come here, but visitors line up for a block or two west of Hyde Street to drive down the eight or so bends at five miles per hour, while others taking photographs line the sidewalk staircases on either side. From the east-facing hillside, you get a great view of Telegraph Hill, Coit Tower, and the bay beyond.

If you like winding people up with arguments involving civic pride, suggest to a knowledgeable local that Lombard really is the crookedest street in the United States, and see if they bring up Vermont Street.

One thing you won't be able to see on Lombard Street any more are the Bring Your Own Big Wheel races. Held every Easter for the last few years, in 2007 it drew too many participants and spectators. Local residents complained about the noise and damage to the street's hedges, which reportedly cost about $250 to fix. Even though this money was quickly raised by donations, the city's clamped down and the race will need a new location in 2008.
