Bent's Old Fort

Bent's Old Fort

Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site was the only fort along the Santa Fe trail between Missouri and Santa Fe.

About this place:

Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site was built in 1833 as the only fort along the Santa Fe trail between Missouri and Mexican settlements. It was a place for Cheyennes and Arapaho to trade buffalo hides. It was also a staging area during the Mexican-American War. The fort is located right out of La Junta, in southeastern Colorado along the Arkansas River.

Visiting Bent's Old Fort is a lot of fun, because it transports you to the mid-nineteenth century west. It's a living history museum that visitors are free to explore on their own. The sites, sounds, and smells are authentic. My favorite part of visiting was encountering the peacocks that get to wander throughout the fort. I enjoyed pretending that I was a young woman traveling along the Santa Fe trail on my way and staying at the fort while my party got supplies. What adventures there would have been!
