Place to see: Mount Etna, Zafferana Etnea, Italy

New growth on the slopes of Etna

New growth on the slopes of Etna

Older lava flows slowly become fertile, with this scrubby tree growth one of the first living things to colonize them.

About this place:

Mount Etna is one of the world's most active volcanoes, and the largest active volcano in Europe. It is visible through much of eastern Sicily, and its eruptions have marked the island's history and even its architecture. The volcano itself sits in a large protected area, many portions of which can be visited -- even hiked, skied, or slept at -- by tourists. The plains around the volcano -- where not covered in lava flows -- are exceptionally fertile.
