Place to see: Floating Bar, Nha Trang, Vietnam

Drinking Frenzy

Drinking Frenzy

The U.S. Coast Guard would be appalled, but drinking while adrift is a daily scene off the coast of Nha Trang (Vietnam).

About this place:

The "Floating Bar" is a component of the all-day boat trips which take travelers to islands off the coast of Nha Trang (Vietnam). Popular among Western and Asian backpackers--and, increasingly, among Vietnamese--the boat trips include snorkling, a free lunch, and a free "floating bar". The drink generally served is a very cheap wine produced in the Vietnamese highlands. In 2007 the cost for the day-long excursion was $6.

The U.S. Coast Guard would be appalled, but drinking while adrift is a daily scene off the coast of Nha Trang (Vietnam). The "floating bar" is part of a popular all-day boat trip to outlying islands. Shortly after lunch, a crew member swims maybe 100 feet away from the boat with several bottles of (very cheap) wine. He is followed by a small horde of travelers, all of whom are hungry for this novel mix of alcohol and the sea. While the floating bar says little about Vietnamese culture, it says a lot about Vietnamese entrepreneurial skills. Shortly after taking this shot, I jumped in for a sip as well.
