North entrance to Tarangire National Park, Tanzania
Tarangire National Park is one Tanzania's least visited northern parks, yet contains a splendid array of wildlife and a unique feel from the golden plains of the more famous Serengeti. With the rains the park is lush and fertile but even in the dry season the swamps remain green, making the park attractive year-round for a large variety of birds. If you're seeking bigger game you won't be disappointed. Lions and other predators take advantage of the large number of prey seeking water, and immense herds of elephants - some numbering into the hundreds - make the park their home. Only two hours south of Arusha, Tarangire is easy to visit while remaining uncrowded compared to other northern parks. If a full safari tour won't fit into you itinerary, a visit Tarangire may be just the thing.
