Place to see: Pololu Valley, Makapala, Hawaii, United States

Pololu Valley

Pololu Valley

Lush valley that leads to a black sand beach.

About this place:

The Pololu Valley is the northernmost in a series of uninhabited valleys that ends at the more popular Waipio Valley. The valley was once home to a thriving village, but devastating 1946 tsunami led Hawaiians to abandon the valley. Pololu Valley is every bit as beautiful as Waipio, but since vehicles aren't permitted here you're likely to have the place mostly to yourself. It's a perfect day hike that ends on a black sand beach. The more adventurous can backpack to the adjacent valleys for true solitude.
