It was powerful to be in St. Peter's Basilica after seeing milestone events there on television all my life. I am not Roman Catholic, and I was moved, but I felt like I could almost sense which ones of the hundreds who shared the space with me were Catholic because I could see what a crucible experience it was for them to be there. Every niche and wall space, every window or floor tile or cornice held some stunning work of art, but still my favorite was the beneficent sun shining through the altar windows at the noontime hour.
