Walking on top of the world

Walking on top of the world

Just a year ago his house was on exactly the spot he is walking now, on top of a 20 meter high dune. But the island moves every year, and the dune is not there no more.

About this place:

One of the most beautiful Dutch islands, in the North of the country, in the Waddensea, Terschelling is an island that never stands still. Literally as at the north changes shape throughout the seasons; the wind blows sand away, making dunes appear and reappear at new places.

Terschelling is famous for its Oerol festival. Every year for a period of 10 days everywhere on the island Oerol activities take place, with over 50,000 visitors and 60 temporary theaters in the open-air and in tents.

Terschelling is surrounded by dunes, counts several villages and at least ten campings. It is an active touristic destination with mostly Germans and Dutch tourists that stay over. It is also very popular among the youth.

Silence, dunes on our right, fields of green left, birds flutter, rabbits and hares jump of our trail as we reached the end of Terschelling. A man appears, grey bearded, with a walking stick, asking us, how do you do?

He is a bird-watcher and a forester. His barrack used to be where we are now, but 50 foot higher. A storm equalized the dune-landscape last year. No need to moan. The island moves all the time. New land is formed just ahead of us, and who knows where the next dune will stand?
