Surrounding the Tulip Garden are tall beautiful trees.
In 1902 the Dutch Windmill or North Windmill became the first windmill to be erected in the city with the purpose of pumping irrigation water to the then desolate Golden Gate Bridge Park. The gardens surrounding the North Windmill were originally built by the windmills caretaker in 1903 and they grew vegetables for animals in the park. A few years later in 1905 a second windmill was built to the south also with the purpose of irrigating the park. Eventual obsolescence of the machines led to them falling into disrepair. In 1964 a campaign was initiated to save the North Windmill and that campaign has continued on through the efforts of concerned San Franciscans to date. After restorations were made to the North Windmill in the 1980's the tulip garden was planted where the vegetable garden used to be. The North Windmill though restored is not currently operational. The South Windmill is apparently still being restored in the Netherlands and its arrival back to the park is unclear at the moment.
