Place to see: Quebec City Fortification Wall, Québec, Canada

On the Walls

On the Walls

On top of the fortification walls that are a bridge over the street. These walls were built by the French and British armies and serve as the only fortified city in North America.

About this place:

Quebec City is the only fortified city in North America. The stone fortification walls that remain to this day separate Old Quebec from the newer part of town. The wall is three miles long and lead up to La Citadelle, the town's active military garrison. People are welcome to walk on top of the walk for its length.

I came to Quebec City knowing that it was the only fortified city in North America, but I never expected the wall itself to be so beautiful. It is old and made of stone with arched underpasses and oxidized copper spires that take on a magically ghoulish green. It was so spectacular that I felt like I had been whisked away to Europe. I walked along the top of the three miles of the wall, admiring the lovely views of the surrounding city, examining old canons, passing by local teenagers hanging out, and families picnicking.
