Built in 1939, the San Francisco Transbay Terminal functioned as the California Toll Bridge Authority, facilitating commuter rail travel from Oakland to San Francisco via the Bay Bridge. In 1958 the 2 tracks on the bottom deck of the Bay Bridge were paved over and converted for traffic use only and, just a few months later in 1959, the Transbay Terminal was converted to a Bus only terminal. Currently, the Transbay Terminal is poised for major reconstruction to accomodate a High Speed Rail connecting San Francisco to Los Angeles which will transport coastal commuters at speeds in excess of 200 MPH via the current Caltrain line.
