The Church and Cemetery

Each town had its own church and adjacent cemetery. This one, in the town of Saint-Jean, was right on the beach.

About this place:

L'ile d'Orleans is an island in the St. Lawrence River just outside Quebec City. It is a primarily agricultural island and was one of the first European settlements in the new world. It was discovered by Jacques Cartier in 1535. The island is 18 miles and has over 600 heritage buildings.

Once over the bridge from the mainland onto l'Ile d'Orleans, a charming island in the St. Lawrence River, one is transplanted into another world. Plan on leaving your watch at home, because here things move more slowly. This is a primarily agricultural island with abundant produce stands, farms, and vineyards. I bought maple syrup for half the price it was selling in nearby Quebec City. I suggest planning on spending at least the day here. Rent a bicycle, walk, drive under the speed limit, and really take in the beauty and charm of the surroundings.
