Haute-Ville is the lower section of Old Quebec, the area of the city fortified between the St. Lawrence River and the fortification wall. Old Quebec, or Vieux Quebec was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. Basse-Ville is the oldest section of Quebec and includes Place Royal, which was built in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain.
