The "Old Goats" are a group of senior swimmers who plunge into the chilly waters of San Francisco Bay year-round. Some of them have been members of the Dolphin Club since the 1930's and they like to sit around the club telling stories of the old times.
The Dolphin Club is one of two swim clubs at Aquatic Park and dates back to 1877. Its picturesque setting looking out to the island of Alcatraz and the historic ships of Hyde Street Pier, makes it one of the prime public clubs in San Francisco. It houses one of the finest fleets of wooden rowboats, which are meticulously maintained and used to pilot the many group swims that are organized every year.
Members of the Dolphin Club swim in the bay where the water temperature dips to a chilly 45 degrees in winter. Dolphin swimmers have crossed the English channel and set records in long distance swimming. Anyone over 18 can join the Club and it is open to the public on alternate days with the South End Club next door.
