Place to sleep: Hotel Kabuki, San Francisco, California, United States

About this place:

Renovated last year, Hotel Kabuki is now part of the Joie de vivre chain and even more importantly located in "The City's" newly popular Japantown. Guests are treated to an in-room tea service and a choice of bath salts for their soaking tub. Afterwards try the free nightly sake tasting (and wine for the timid).

Robert Redford (who lives in Marin) has turned the nearby rundown Kabuki Theaters into a more comfortable spot to watch movies than your living room. Naturally anything in SF involves food and Redford has replaced popcorn with grilled hanger steak and truffled frites. Feel free to place your pinot noir in the cup holder next to your reclining chair.

    Dear Honey:
I'm writing this as I gaze onto the Japanese fountain and garden outside my sliding doors. Too bad you are not here to take advantage of the soaking tub and sake tastings. It's so peaceful here, visitors can throw away their ambien. Right outside my door though shopping beckons-kimonos and origami gifts. If I run into Robert Redford at his Kabuki/Sundance movie theater I'll tell him to watch www.talkintravel.com
