Dubbed by Wikipedia as a "Backpacker's ghetto," Khaosan Road attracts both the washed and unwashed traveling masses with bargain price accommodations and its own disheveled brand of Khao-s. More budget hotels, street booths and restaurants line the road than you can shake a stick at, fiercely competing with hordes of hair extension weavers, internet cafes and 24-hour custom tailors. Lithe stray kitties and backpackers stroll Khaosan Road during the day and at night, the street comes alive with a selection of throbbing pop songs blaring from restaurants and various street acts.
Come hungry and tired: Pad thai, fried rice, falafel and doner kebap are sold on roadside carts - a heaping styrofoam tray of pad thai goes for just 15 baht - and hotel accommodations hover around the 400 baht range, if you split a room. And if neither of you mind a lack of hot water.
