If you're looking to spend a fortune and dislike trendy hotels, stay at the Carlyle. They don't call them rooms, but rather apartments, and you will feel as though you have a well-appointed apartment at one of the best addresses in the city. The service is generally wonderful, although be aware that they do play favorites with regulars (i.e. monogrammed pillows and custom made flower arrangements). Eat across the street at Cafe Boulud and you won't be disappointed. Rates are exorbitant.
